A man in search of a meal was standing on the bank of a wide and rushing river watching fish swim through the currents. Most of the fish swam near the middle of the river but every now and then a single fish would come close enough to the shore for the man to catch with his net. Upon seeing how easy it was to catch a fish that came to shore, he decided to wait at that spot until the next fish swam close enough for him to catch so that he could eat. A day went by and no fish came close to the shore. Frustrated and hungry the man yelled out "why is this not working!" A woman in a nearby cottage heard the man yell, and approached him and said "the fish like to swim in the middle of the river, if you want to catch one, go to the middle." The man replied "but standing here is easy, the water is cold and plenty of fish come to the shore. I can catch one here." Confused, the woman walked away. Another day passed and again no fish came to the shore. Frustrated, the man yelled "why isn't this working!" The same woman approached him and said "the fish like to swim in the middle of the river, why don't you go fish there?" Annoyed, the man replied "because I can't carry my net while I am swimming and a fish will come to the shore as soon as I leave." Confused, the woman walked away. On the third day, yet again, no fish came to the shore. Frustrated, the man yelled "why isn't this working!" The woman from the cottage started to approach the man but instead went into the river, swam to the middle, caught a fish with her hands, and swam back towards the man. Bewildered, the man asked her “why did you do that? You had no net, the water was cold, and you could have drowned! How did you know you would catch a fish?” The woman replied “I had no net but I had my hands; the water was cold but swimming kept me warm; and I did not know I would catch one but by going to where the fish were I trusted that my odds to catch one were greater than standing on the shore hoping the fish would come to me.” In life we can choose to stand on the shore waiting for fish to come to us and become frustrated when they don’t, or we can choose to travel harder paths and go find opportunity knowing we may fail but our survival skills will keep us alive and help us be resourceful in our pursuit. Which are you?
